Shooting on a budget

So you are planning to shoot your own indie film with limited staffing (only you and a couple of other friends), you might also have limited resources so you are looking for a way to maximize everything. Even if this may seem very hard to do, it is very doable; you just need to know a few important video production techniques in order for you to maximize your resources without sacrificing quality.

Everybody has to start somewhere, right? Well, this might be your big break. Of course you might face a lot of challenges along the way due to limited resources as limited assistance, but with the right techniques, you will be able to make a movie with cinema like quality even if you don’t have a high end camera and a lot of resources.

Planning is a start

Before you even start shooting, you must plan out every single step along the way so that when the time comes, your flow will be as smooth as silk. Before anything else, you must be able to visualize the scenes you want to shoot. It will be really helpful if you or one of your friends (that’s good in drawing) can make up a storyboard wherein you will be able to list down and imagine all the possible scenes and shots as well as shot angles you will need so when the time comes, you have a general idea of what you want. This technique is really a time saver.

Utilizing what you have

Of course there are scenes that you want to shoot which require a few camera accessories, which you might not have. It’s time to get a bit creative and try to make do with what you have. If you want to have a shot that needs some sort of a dolly, you can do so by placing your tripod on a skateboard and on a flat surface to create that “dolly effect”. Whatever you might need, you can let your imagination run wild and make do of ordinary household items to create scenes.

There are many different techniques you can utilize especially when you find yourself lacking in equipment and resources, the only important thing is to not forget the basic techniques when shooting, everything else, you can basically improvise.
